When I was much younger, junior high...To trust....

When I was much younger, junior high, we would play a game of trust among ourselves. This is superficial, I know, but makes an interesting illustration all the same.

I would occasionally get together with friends and we had an ongoing competition where one of us would be tied up and we would see how long it took to escape. This was all in fun, mind you. Each time one of us would take a turn and we would keep track of how long it took to get out. Of course, you were automatically disqualified if you couldn’t get out. Several of my friends went first. We had all practiced knot tying in scouts and it was fun to try to make it so they couldn’t get out, then watch them squirm. We would often leave them for a while if they couldn’t get out right away. Then, it was my turn.

This game was certainly the ultimate in giving up control and I knew I would be doing that, but I did not hesitate when my arms were pulled behind my back and my wrists were tied firmly together with rope. Then I was made to sit in a chair. My ankles were tied together and then my arms and legs were tied to the chair, leaving me quite well tied and unable to move much. My friends then stood back and chuckled as I squirmed against the ropes which held me tight. Then they told me keep trying to get out and they would be back later. Then they were gone and there I was, tied up and definitely not in control!

Despite the fact I like to be in control I am not claustrophobic so I didn’t really panic. When I realized I was really stuck I did get a little nervous for a time and then settled down. It was a helpless feeling as I sat there trying to figure out what to do and thinking “how did I get myself into this?” The ropes were much too tight to squeeze my hands through and I couldn’t see any of the knots or how they were tied behind my back, so my concentration was actually taken up by trying to figure out how I was tied and if there was a way to undo any of it. Believe it or not, that part was pretty fun!

I can honestly say that after the initial panic, I did feel more at peace with the situation even though I was not in control at all. As I sat there I knew that it was OK not to be in control. The worst that would likely happen would be that I would lose out to one of my friends, who got out faster, or I wouldn’t free myself at all but I would eventually be freed, or so I thought.

I sat there tied up for a long time and my friends didn’t come back. I continued to struggle. After all, I didn't have anything else to do! Eventually, after more than an hour, I managed to loosen the rope around one wrist enough to squeeze my hand free. No speed record, but I was at least free! My friends were impressed that I could get out at all, and because I was able to get out they eventually wanted to try again, so I got to be reminded of what it was like to give up control more than once!

Yes, I did agree to let them do it again!Ronnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-863598046667275912.post-51158182637095934482011-10-21T01:17:07.027-05:002011-10-21T01:17:07.027-05:00Great thoughts, Christine! But in Genesis, GOD Himself said that it's not good to be alone. Yes, I believe that all Scripture is God-breathed, but I also know that no human (including Paul) is perfect, and sometimes our own thoughts can creep into prophesy. So, in the end, I do not believe that God has shown me that He's given me the "gift of singleness", so I'm gonna go with God's words in Gen. and continue to believe that it's not good for me to be alone, and know that in His time He will bring me & the love He's created for me together.
-BriaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-863598046667275912.post-56318106688325332572011-10-20T22:46:32.598-05:002011-10-20T22:46:32.598-05:00Amen! and amen means, I agree, so be it!Amen! and amen means, I agree, so be it!Lainie S.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-863598046667275912.post-12083029982117337872011-10-20T09:02:34.246-05:002011-10-20T09:02:34.246-05:00I have a lot to say about this topic, but don'...I have a lot to say about this topic, but don't want to get too lengthy. We are better together than apart. One can put one thousand to fight, but two can put ten thousand to flight!!! So much more can be done in life and more importantly for the Kingdom as two. So, why I am still single? It is not for refusing lots of proposals. I don't see a lot of the single men I know pursuing. I don't feel it is my role to do that part of the coming together. I heard an amazing teaching from Plumbline Ministries that said that many men from the current generation were not taught how to fight for what they want and how to protect(often because of no father in the home or absent father out trying to make money). That is how I am praying- for both sexes to be the way God created them to be- and for men to pursue these amazing single women I do life with:)Lainie S.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-863598046667275912.post-20790256413440449312011-10-19T22:00:45.290-05:002011-10-19T22:00:45.290-05:00I was fortunate enough to hear Rebecca St James sp...I was fortunate enough to hear Rebecca St James speak this summer... and as a 10 years + married woman, some of the things she said surprised me. She was speaking of meeting her husband and how Blessed she felt, but at the same time, shortly before that, was thinking that maybe God didn't have anyone for her (and Im paraphrasing here) that maybe she was meant to be single and share her message of waiting.... Sooo.... idk how that pertains to where you are... BUT it could be MUCH worse.

I am at the part in life right now where divorce happens. People in our life that we thought were happy, best friends we vacationed with, people we had over for Thanksgiving are ending their marriages. Be thankful you aren't in a cruel, or heartless, or abusive relationship/marriage. But at the same time, be prayerful that God has your perfection in wait for you.

Praying for you Christine...Danellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15233246403026604655noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-863598046667275912.post-45950708252532119652011-09-06T12:53:41.597-05:002011-09-06T12:53:41.597-05:00A.M.E.N!
